At the end of every year, I print labels for around 75 DVDs and have tried a few solutions over the year. Sticky labels were quick to print, but took forever to peel off, and stick on (even with a stomper), and would often jam in the users disc drive (especially on laptops). A couple years ago I got an Epson R series inkjet and things started off great. It print straight onto the disc, it was quicker than sticky labels, and the output looked much better. But my relationship with my Epson soon turned into immense, seething hatred. The tray that's required for printing is cumbersome to use and doesn't store easily, it often says it's not aligned when it is aligned, or sometimes the Epson will take the disc in, spit it back out, and refuse to continue doing anything until you turn it off, turn it back on, and wait a few minutes for it to recharge its ink. I spent more time dealing with tray alignment/feeding issues and hearing the Epson constantly get ready to print (yet actually do so) rather than seeing it actually do what I asked it to do: print a disc!

When I saw the demo online for the Discpainter though, it seemed all my answers had been answered. In short, it does everything extremely well that the Epson did poorly and does an acceptable job at what the Espon did best.

What It Gets Right over an Epson R Series:
* Small footprint, with no accessories or trays to keep track of
* Very quite operation
* Fast print speeds (Epson prints faster once it gets going, but when you add it up, it's slower)
* Ink dries quickly (no more 24 hour long drying times!)
* Doesn't randomly flip out and refuse to work because you looked at it the wrong way

What It Doesn't Get Right over an Epson R Series:
* Image quality. The Discpainter is 1200dpi, which is plenty of resolution, however it's only a 4 color system whereas an Epson R series, even at the $90 price mark, is a 6 color system. With those 2 less colors, the Discpainter has to dither the image more often than the Epson will ever have to. When the Discpainter doesn't have to dither, it looks great, just as good as the Epson, but when it does, the image quality looks like a 4 color inkjet from over 5 years ago.

I just finished printing 50 discs back to back on this thing without it ever having to stop, whereas on the Epson I had, something would go wrong every 3 discs requiring a restarting of the print job, or worse, restarting the printer.

Overall, I'm very positive on the Discpainter. As someone that prints a large number of disc labels a year, but not enough to warrant professional production, this is a great product because of the speed, size, quietness, and ease of use. However, it's inexcusable that something this expensive isn't using 6 colors which just about ever printer has had now for several years.

I was looking for some blank CDs that I could put together some music for my new car's CD player. With this product I could quickly copy the music from one of my music CDs, or put together a compilation of songs from various groups or singers. I like the ability to write over a burned CD. In a couple of cases I either wrote over a song with one I liked better or rearranged the order of the various songs later on.

One thing I checked before buying the product was the speed of my computer's CD burner drive to take advantage of these Ultra Speed disks.

The disks that I have burned for my car's CD player play just fine.

External DVD/cd Writer Black Review

External DVD/cd Writer Black

Pioneer DVR-X152

This device reads or writes virtually any DVD or CD format; see Customer Images for the variations and speeds.

Pros:

- It comes with everything needed to install and use; i.e., all necessary cables and a Nero 8 software CD.The latter provides options for copying discs, audio "ripping", audio burning, data burning (e.g., from your hard drive), and disc labeling with LightScribe laser etching technology.

- To "install" this device on my Windows XP PC, it was connected via the included USB cable, plugged into the wall receptacle with the included transformer and cables, and powered up. XP recognized it, and it worked immediately. The Nero software wasn't required to write or read CDs or DVDs, since my PC had Sonic Digital Media software for those functions.

I've only created a dozen or so of CDs and DVDs and those worked fine, so I can't comment on high volume use.

-The LightScribe feature on the Pioneer DVR-X152 will laser etch a label of your design on a CD or DVD.You'll need LightScribe enabled CD or DVD media for this to work, which is much more expensive than regular discs.

Cons:

- The Nero 8 software wouldn't fully install on my Dell XPS Windows XP system. The"custom" install option, for example, terminates with an error message that says the installation was interrupted and is shutting down, even though nothing interrupted it.I tried it several times and it always failed, which was very frustrating. However, it seems that the only thing that didn't finish was the creation of desktop and start menu shortcuts, which I did manually. The only unique function Nero offers, in my case, was creating and burning LightScribe labels. You'd think that such installation problems would have been fixed in Nero version 2, much less Nero 8.

- Clicking the "?" from Nero 8's window sends you to their web site, where they try to convince you to upgrade to Nero 9, the latest [extra cost] version. In fact, the bottom 10% of Nero 8's display is an ad for Nero 9. I'd expect such an annoyance from freeware, not from something you bought.

Other:

- The LightScribe labeling function has two settings; default and dark.On default, it takes 17 minutes to etch a label onto a disc.On the dark setting, it takes 32 minutes per disc, but the result is a much better label; see Customer Images.

- I did a timed test, backing up data via the Pioneer drive and an internal NEC DVD drive (16x, model ND-3530A).The data consisted of 2,800 digital images consuming over 4 GB, nearly filling a DVD.Software used was Nero 8 or Sonic Digital Media LE, a competitor. Here's how long it took to write (burn) that data:

...Nero took 9 minutes 19 seconds on the NEC ND-3530A internal drive
...Nero took 7 minutes 29 seconds on the Pioneer drive
...Sonic took 6 minutes 9 seconds on the Pioneer drive

This (non-scientific) test shows that Sonic software writes faster than Nero, and that the Pioneer drive using a USB 2 interface writes faster than an internal 16x DVD drive (in a Dell XPS PC).

Summary:

The Nero 8 software deserves maybe two stars, but the device itself does everything I wanted it to, which averages out to a 4 star rating.

This drive works as advertised. sturdier than the drive that came with the computer. The E-SATA connections couldn't be any easier. No having to figure out and deal with the jumpers was a nice surprise. Just plug it in and turn the computer on.

I made a purchase at walmart but they have limited quality blank DVDs and so was, Staple, Office Max, Best Buy and Office Depot they may have what amazon have at times but they do cost more. If you needed them right away, it leaves you no choice. I ordered this spooled DVDs to keep in my workplace for backup all my work data in the lab as I get more than 2Gb of genetic data per run. Having them was a lifesaver as my hardrive might fail when we least expect them.

Finished product looks very "rich".Comes very compact--not "bad" to assemble but can be a little tricky.Doesn't take long to assemble...I was pleased initially. It's been over a year now and I find that the shelves don't stand up to any load--I used for DVDs--shelves bowed and front posts tend to come apart. Can't wait to replace now.Ammended review--doesn't stand the test of time and way overpriced!Would NOT recommend this item.

This is a nice case, but NOT made to hold a dual DVD player like it claims. Or it can hold both screens - BARELY - but none of the cords. I'm disappointed. I bought it to hold our new dual screen DVD player for the car and it failed miserably. BOO.
