There's a fair amount of work on realism of the 1700s, even more on Impressionism of the late 1800s, and tons on the pop art of the mid-1900s.However, Bruegel lived and painted in the 1500s.I can't say I've seen much discussion about art from that period. This is all a tiny bit before Shakespeare.
So many artists have voyaged "to Italy to study the masters" that as soon as the narrator said, "Bruegel left the Netherlands," I finished, "and visited Italy!"
So many artists are famous for portraits of singular people.Bruegel painted hundreds of people doing different things.I really think those making period films may want to look to his work to learn how Europeans dressed at the end of the Dark Ages.Though CENTURIES before another movement, I wonder if some would consider his art "surreal."
Still, as happy as I am that this documentary exists, personally I wouldn't buy any Bruegel reprints. His work is not aesthetically pleasing to me, as much as I appreciate having him as an artistic ancestor.I'm not sure that other viewers in the 21st century will love it either.

Product Description:
Pieter Bruegel the Elder remains a mystery, as few details of his 16th century life are known. As an artist, he was greatly influenced and inspired by his great Dutch predecessor, Hieronymous Bosch. His work reveals typically Boschian themes, and he used a similar keen humor to convey his artistic message. Bruegel's renowned works depicting the life of peasants are also examined in this documentary. He was one of the first masters of landscape painting, and his satirical drawings are as relevant today as in their own time. Bruegel's religious works combine simplicity and depth in their spiritual message. Leading art historians and scholars give a glimpse at the life and work of this Dutch master painter.
